Destinations

Destination Highlight: Houston, Texas

Houston, TexasWhile the first thing you might think of when you hear about this city is “Houston, we have a problem,” this major metropolis (the fourth-largest in the United States) offers much more than Mission Control. Read on for a few reasons to make Houston, Texas your next travel nursing destination.

A diverse collection of renowned restaurants. Houston is fast becoming a hotspot for unique new restaurants staffed by world-class chefs. Visit Reef, recently named the No.1 seafood restaurant in America by Bon Appetit magazine, for flavorable Gulf of Mexico fish, or try Beaver’s for a great steak or burger. If you want a hot, comforting breakfast, don’t miss The Breakfast Klub, famous for its wings and waffles. Be sure to also try Underbelly, named one of the best new restaurants in the American South by Conde Nast Traveler, for a hearty dinner.

Quirky parades and attractions. Though it’s Texas’ capital city with the tagline “Keep Austin weird,” Houston is known for its unique shows and exhibits as well. If you’re in town during the spring, bring the whole family to watch the Art Car Parade, which features more than 250 creatively designed vehicles (including unicycles and even lawnmowers). Even if you miss the parade, though, visit the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art most weekends to see the Beer Can House and Smither Park, which both feature functional artwork made from recycled materials. Finally, make sure to stop by David Adickes’ SculptrWorx studio to see giant statues of U.S. presidents’ heads (at least 20 feet tall).

A vibrant museum district. Whether you want to check out classic paintings and photographs, along with new films, at the Museum of Fine Arts, more modern pieces at the Contemporary Arts Museum or hands-on exhibits at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, you’ll find 19 museums all within a 1.5-mile radius. Don’t miss the Children’s Museum of Houston, ranked No. 1 in the country by Parents magazine, or the Menil Collection, either.

Unique shopping experiences. If you want a mall that the entire family will enjoy, look no further than The Galleria. More than 375 stores, including a mixture of high-end businesses like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue and department stores like Macy’s and Dillard’s., are here, and the kids can visit the ice rink, swimming pools, video arcade or children’s play center while you shop.

Out-of-this-world fun. Of course, no stay in Houston is complete without a visit to Space Center Houston. While you won’t actually be leaving Earth, you can tour both historic and new Mission Control centers, experience what a blast-off feels like in the launching pad area, view a full-size space shuttle replica and even have lunch with an astronaut.
