Four Housing Tips for Travel Nurses

Housing for travel nursesAs a travel nurse, you have the option to have the company provide housing for you or accept the housing stipend and find an apartment or home to rent on your own. Below are several tips for finding affordable, safe housing wherever your travel assignment takes you.

1. Stay with a friend or family member. Living with your parents, grandparents or siblings is ideal, but if you don’t have close family members living in an area you’d like to travel to, consider talking to aunts and uncles, cousins and even in-laws. If they don’t have any room, they might know someone who’d be happy to let you stay for a few weeks. College roommates or even travel nurses you’ve met on previous assignments are also great contacts when you’re looking for housing.

2. Network through Facebook. Social media is a great way to connect to other travelers and find housing in different areas throughout the country. Check out the Travel Nursing: Lessons and Tips and Travel Nursing: Places/Rooms for Rent groups on Facebook to find housing and other travelers who may have tips about living and working in a certain location. Another Facebook group, Travel Nurse Buddies, helps you find nurses to travel with so you can split the cost of housing.

3. Check out AirBNB. If you’re staying in an area for only 13 weeks, it can be challenging to find affordable housing that doesn’t require a lease or extended contract. AirBNB allows you to find hosts in different cities who are renting out their rooms or even entire homes. Simply search for your destination, select the dates you’ll need housing, choose between private rooms, apartments and homes, and set a price range. You’ll pay for your housing through AirBNB as well, so everything is taken care of before you arrive.

4. Book housing through Roomorama. Similar to AirBNB, Roomorama allows you to find short-term housing in the area where you’ll be taking a travel nursing assignment. It offers choices between hotels, hostels, bedrooms, bed-and-breakfasts, homes and apartments as well as the ability to choose the amenities included (such as internet or pool access), smoking- and child-friendly accommodations, and even the neighborhood.
