Video: Finding New Opportunities Through Travel Nursing

Jake Shearer, travel nurseMed-surg travel nurse Jake Shearer says he loves his career but wasn’t sure what to expect when he began his job.

“When I got into nursing, I didn’t know I was going to be taking care of the patients’ families as well. It definitely is rewarding, but it’s one of the harder parts of the job,” Jake says. “Nursing is about taking care of people. They have bills to pay, jobs they’re missing when they’re in the hospital. It means a lot to help them get through that time when they’re already stressed out.”

Exploring new parts of the country (or your state)

Originally from northern Florida, Jake says travel nursing jobs appealed to him because he could work in southern Florida and see what he liked best in the area.

“I wanted to get my foot in the door at different hospitals because I have friends that live down here and knew I wanted to live here eventually,” Jake says. “I’m trying to figure out which hospital I want to be at by taking travel jobs.”

Deciding on a travel nursing agency

Jake says choosing the right agency to work with was simple after he decided he definitely wanted to be a travel nurse.

“I googled travel nursing, and RNnetwork was the first company that came up. I saw that it was on the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list, and I thought, ‘Hey, this looks like a good enough company,'” Jake recalls. “I’ve been happy with the attentiveness of Rachel, my recruiter, and all of the credentialing people making sure I have everything in line.”

Making a difference to patients

The best part of his job, Jake says, is being an advocate for someone who wouldn’t otherwise have one.

“I get to be there for someone who’s going through a rough time and feels like no one is on their side,” Jake says. “When a patient wants to give me a hug or just smiles and thanks me, that’s good enough for me.”
