Top 5 Apps for Nurses

20140408_nurse_appsAs a travel nurse, you’re frequently on the go — and lugging a medical dictionary or drug handbook on every assignment can be cumbersome and impractical. Take advantage of the healthcare apps available for your smartphone or tablet so you can easily access information wherever you are! Below are just five to check out:

  • Epocrates. This app provides drug information, including an interaction check, a pill identifier, easy access to health insurance formularies and a provider directory. While the app is free for both Apple and Android phones and tablets, the paid version also includes diagnostic information and a searchable disease database.
  • Nursing Central. Designed for nurses and nursing students, Nursing Central includes Davis’ Drug Guide, Taber’s Medical Dictionary, databases of both lab and diagnostic tests and diseases, and access to MEDLINE’s medical journals. Note: The app is free in both Apple and Android stores, but it requires a paid subscription to Nursing Central as well.
  • Merck Manual. If you’re looking for a comprehensive medical guide to consult on-the-go, the Merck Manual is a great option. It includes a searchable database of hundreds of diseases and can also be purchased with Davis’ Drug Guide and the Merck Manual of Patient Symptoms.
  • Pocket Anatomy. When you need to visually explain a health concern or procedure to a patient — or test your own nursing knowledge — Pocket Anatomy can help. The app features full anatomy of both male and female models, 360-degree rotation, nine layers of neurovascular, musculoskeletal and internal organ visual content, and the ability to take quizzes and add notes. All of the content is housed within the app, so no wireless or 4G connection is necessary to use it once it’s been downloaded.
  • MedCalc. This handy medical calculator gives you access to medical formulas, classifications, scales and scores, including formulas for calculating simple things like body mass index (BMI) and even more complicated numbers like red blood cell indices. The app also supports both U.S. and SI units and allows you to search for equations using names and keywords. Additionally, you can set a customizable list of favorite equations for quicker access.
