One of the six states that make up New England, Connecticut is rich in history and beauty. Geographically it is the third-smallest state, but Connecticut provides a wealth of places to see and things to do. From its scenic shorelines and country drives to antique shopping, the Constitution State is an excellent place for your next travel-nursing assignment.
Our nation’s history
Many of our country’s most spectacular stories surround a tree, and the tale of the Charter Oak is one of the oldest. In 1687, Joseph Wadsworth hid Connecticut’s Royal Charter inside a grand white oak tree, and although the tree fell after a storm, a dedication monument stands in its memory.
Another fascinating historical site is the birthplace of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, whom Samuel Clemens (better known as Mark Twain) developed and wrote about in his Hartford home.
Mystic Seaport is the nation’s largest maritime museum and an excellent spot to witness America’s seafaring past. The grounds cover more than 19 acres with a working shipyard and a recreation of a coastal village that transports visitors back to the 1800s.
The spread of education
Connecticut is home to many of our country’s top universities. A great place to see the natural history of the state is the University of Connecticut, with biological collections that feature thousands of mammal, bird, fossil and plant specimens. Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History hosts one the largest scientific collections in North America. From temporary exhibits featuring the culture of the Samurai and Japan to the second-largest repository of dinosaur artifacts in the U.S., the Peabody is a great place to learn.
Yale’s campus also contains a massive art gallery with more than 4,000 pieces, including works by Vincent van Gogh. The Wesleyan campus in Middletown hosts another remarkable art collection: more than 24,000 works of art on paper and one of the finest print collections at any U.S. university.
Off the beaten path
The Essex steam train and riverboat are great ways to enjoy adventure outside the norm. Ride in a restored 1920s Pullman dining car for lunch and see Gillette Castle, home of the late legendary stage actor William Gillette (famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes). The majestic stone mansion is filled with handcrafted southern white oak furniture.
Just outside downtown New Britain is the Go Ape zip line course. With five individual sections totaling 2,250 feet, the course takes you high through the canopy and features 40 exciting crossings.
