INFOGRAPHIC: The Importance of Nurse Leaders

We’ve discussed the benefits of earning a bachelor’s of science in nursing and even reasons to get a master’s of science in nursing. The University of Arizona College of Nursing took it a step further and explored how advanced nursing degrees can help nurses evolve from providing disease-centered to patient-centered care in a recent infographic.

Here are a few stats:

  • One-third of nurses are older than 50
  • 55 percent of nurses today plan to retire in the next 10 years
  • One million new registered nurses are needed by 2016 to care for an increasing patient load due to healthcare reform
  • 48 percent of nurses work in private medical and surgical hospitals, but employment is expected to grow 26 percent in outpatient and long-term care facilities
  • Only 50 percent of nurses today hold a bachelor’s degree
  • Earning an MSN boosts the average salary by 17 percent
