5 Reasons Nurses Should Join Instagram

Woman using smartphoneThere’s a reason Instagram has more than 400 million monthly active users: It’s simple to use, allows you to share images and videos with friends instantly, and can be completely customized to your interests. If you’re not already using this app, here are five reasons to give it a try:

Instagram can be completely private

Unlike Facebook, where you can still stalk your exes who haven’t set their security settings high enough (or don’t have any), Instagram allows users to create a completely private account where no one but friends they’ve accepted can see their photos and videos. The only thing visible to users who have not been invited to follow you is your profile picture (if you set one), username, name and brief bio (if you choose to write one). If you worry about posting photos of your family or travel nursing jobs online, a private Instagram account is a secure way to go.

You only see accounts you want to see

No more feeds full of pictures or news stories that one of your friends “liked” on Facebook. On Instagram, you follow friends, bloggers or companies you’re interested in and only see content from those people you follow — unless you tap the “following” tab within notifications to see which photos and videos your friends liked. Instagram does occasionally post ads within your feed, but you can hide the ones that don’t interest you as well.

It’s easy to find other nurse friends using hashtags

While you can’t join travel nurse groups like you might on Facebook, you can find other travel nurses who use Instagram by checking out #travelnurse or #travelnursing and following accounts that interest you. You might find another nurse who’s working in your area (or has taken an assignment there before), or you may simply connect over your shared interests and love of travel.

You can share and edit your favorite travel photos from your phone

There’s no need to upload your photos from your camera to your computer so you can edit them in Photoshop or PicMonkey before posting them. If your photo of Niagara Falls needs a bit of color correction, you can fix it with an Instagram filter or simply lighten it up. Instagram allows you to blur or sharpen images, convert them to black and white, and even crop, rotate and straighten them. The new Instagram app Boomerang (which you can download separately) also allows you to create mini videos using your photos.

You can get a daily dose of humor and inspiration

We’ve shared some of our favorite nurse accounts to follow on Instagram, but there are plenty of other fun ones, like @instanursing and @thenerdynurse, to check out as well. You can follow your travel nurse staffing agency (we’re @rnnetworknurses) and see pictures other travelers submit from their assignments or even get fitness tips from nurses like @nurse_muscles.

Whether you want a low-key social media network where you can safely share photos of your life or a way to network with other nurses, Instagram is a great app to check out.
